Why this works:

Skill gain happens when your roll results in power between 1.01 and 39 QL. The recommendation above gives you the highest percentage of rolls in this "skillgain zone". Aim for around 50-55% skillgain rate for optimal grinding.

How channeling grinding works:

For optimal skill gain, cast spells with difficulty 10-25 points below your channeling skill. Keep low alignment when grinding 30-70 skill. Wear plate/chain armor for the 30% casting penalty. Grind away from your deity's domain to avoid difficulty reduction.

Pro Tips

  • Use lower QL shovels to make harder tiles easier to dig for skill.
  • Mine "Poor" or "Acceptable" veins - save good veins for later!
  • Old trees are harder - match tree age to your skill level.
  • Keep alignment low (below 70) when grinding between 30-70 skill for harder casts.
  • Wear plate/chain armor for 30% casting penalty - harder = more skill.
  • Cast away from your domain to avoid difficulty reduction.
  • Link with 1-2 priests for +3 difficulty per link (no penalty). Avoid 3+ links.
  • Sleep bonus doubles all skill gains - use it wisely!
  • Sleep bonus doubles channeling gains - stock up on favor before using it!
Skill Grinder

1 What is this tool?

A Monte Carlo simulator for Wurm Online skill rolls. It runs thousands of simulated rolls using the game's actual formulas to predict outcomes like ore quality, smithing results, taming success, and more.

2 How to use

1. Select an activity type (Mining, Farming, Smithing, etc.)

2. Enter your skill levels and tool quality

3. Click Run Simulation

4. View the distribution of possible outcomes

3 Activity Types

Mining - Ore power & QL
Smithing - Imp success & steps
Taming - Taming success rate
Channeling - Spell power
Shearing - Wool QL from animals
Farming - Harvest quality

Plus: Digging, Woodcutting, Creation, Imping, Meditation, Fileting, Forestry

4 Understanding Results

Success Rate - How often you'll get a positive outcome. Higher is better - aim for 70%+ for reliable results.

Average - The typical result you can expect. For mining/smithing, this is your expected QL.

Range - Best and worst case outcomes. Wide ranges mean more variance - results will be unpredictable.

Median - Half your results will be above this, half below. More reliable than average when ranges are wide.

Skillgain - Rolls between 1-39 power. You only gain skill when rolls land in this "skillgain zone".

90+ QL - Percentage of results 90 QL or higher. Shows chance of getting top-tier quality items.

What to aim for:

Look at the chart distribution - a tight cluster on the right means consistent high results. If your average is low, try improving your skill, tool QL, or adding imbues/runes.

5 Skill Advisor

Switch to the Skill Advisor tab to get grinding recommendations for:

Digging/Mining - Best tile type & tool QL
Woodcutting - Best tree age & tool QL
Channeling - Best spells by god (Fo, Vynora, Magranon, Libila)

The advisor finds the optimal difficulty for skillgain - where your rolls land in the 1-39 power "skillgain zone" most often.

Understanding Your Results

1 Reading the Statistics

Success Rate

Percentage of actions that succeed (roll > 0). At high skill, most actions succeed. Failed actions produce no result.

Average

The typical result value you'll get. Add up all results and divide by total - this is what you can expect on average.

Range

The lowest and highest possible results. Your actual results will always fall somewhere within this range.

Median

The middle value - half your results will be above this, half below. More reliable than average when there are outliers.

Skillgain

Percentage of rolls between 1-39 power. This is the "skillgain zone" - you only gain skill when your roll lands in this range!

90+ QL

Percentage of results that are 90 QL or higher. Shows how often you'll get top-tier quality items from this action.

2 The Distribution Chart

The bar chart shows how often each result occurs. Taller bars mean that result happens more frequently.

A spike on the left (like at QL 1) means many rolls are producing minimum results - this happens when the task is too difficult for your current setup.

A smooth bell curve centered higher up means your skills and tools are well-matched to the task difficulty.

3 Improving Your Results

Mining Tips
  • Use a higher QL pickaxe to improve ore quality
  • Mine from Good or Very Good veins - Poor veins cap your potential
  • Easier ores (Iron, Rock) produce higher QL than harder ores (Gold, Silver)
  • Rare/Supreme/Fantastic pickaxes add bonus QL to results
  • Imbue and runes provide additional quality bonuses
Digging Tips
  • Use a lower QL shovel to make harder tiles easier (for skill grinding)
  • Dirt is easiest, Steppe is hardest - match tile type to your skill
  • Slope adds difficulty - flat ground is easier
  • For skillgain, you want rolls between 1-39 power
Woodcutting Tips
  • Use a higher QL hatchet for better wood quality
  • Tree age affects difficulty - Very Young is easy, Shriveled is hard
  • Match tree age to your skill level for best results
  • Imbue on the hatchet improves quality further
Smithing Tips
  • Higher QL lumps, pelts, and whetstones improve results
  • Imbue on tools provides significant quality bonuses
  • Rare items get bonus QL during improvement
  • Using a title (for armor/horse gear) adds +5 bonus
Farming Tips
  • Use a higher QL rake for better harvests
  • Higher Nature skill provides bonus to rolls
  • Different crops have different difficulty levels
Taming Tips
  • Higher Soul Strength improves taming success
  • Diseased/Slow creatures are easier to tame
  • Fierce/Champion creatures are much harder
  • Younger animals are easier than adults
  • Fo followers and HotS get taming bonuses
Channeling Tips
For Grinding (max skillgain):
  • Cast spells 10-25 difficulty below your channeling skill
  • Keep low alignment (30-70 skill) for harder casts
  • Cast away from your deity's domain to avoid difficulty reduction
  • Wear plate/chain armor for 30% casting penalty
  • Link with 1-2 priests for +3 difficulty per link
For Enchanting (high power casts):
  • Stay at 100 alignment (WL) or -100 (BL)
  • Cast near your altar or in a temple for bonuses
  • Remove plate/chain armor for no penalty
  • Link for higher power, but watch the difficulty increase
Shearing Tips
  • Uses Animal Husbandry skill with scissors
  • Higher QL scissors produce better quality wool
  • Animal age affects difficulty: Young is easiest, Venerable is hardest
  • Shear older animals for more skillgain (harder = more skill ticks)
  • Shear younger animals for higher quality wool
General Tips
  • Higher tool QL improves output quality, but lower QL makes tasks harder for more skillgain
  • Match task difficulty to your skill level
  • Experiment with different parameter combinations
Experiment!

Try changing tool QL, material types, or other parameters and run the simulation again to see how it affects your results. This helps you find the optimal setup for your current skill level.
